Bad Headaches: Why Astigmatism Cause Them & How An Optometrist Can Help

Blog

Are you tired of constant headaches that never seem to go away? You may be dealing with an eye condition called astigmatism that must be corrected before you will feel better. Below, you will find out why astigmatism is causing you to have bad headaches and how an optometrist can help.

Why Does Astigmatism Cause Bad Headaches?

You can develop astigmatism in one or both of your eyes. The condition stems from the cornea of your eyes having an irregular curve. The shape of the cornea causes an insufficient amount of light to make it to the retina of your eyes, which interferes with how well your vision is. The blurred vision from astigmatism is what causes bad headaches.

If you are constantly struggling to see things clearly by squinting your eyes, it is also a reason for bad headaches. You will not find any relief from astigmatism without the help of an optometrist. He or she can perform an eye examination to diagnose and treat the astigmatism. The examination is painless and can be done in a short period of time.

How Can An Optometrist Perform An Examination To Help Astigmatism?

The main thing an optometrist will do is determine how to correct your blurred vision, likely by prescribing lenses to do it. You will be given a simple test known as the Vision Acuity Assessment (VAT) to find out how well you can read from a distance. There will be a chart full of different sized letters hanging on a wall that you must stand in front of. You will have to call out the letters that you are able to read without having to squint your eyes.

The optometrist will also examine the cornea in each of your eyes with a tool called a keratoscope. The tools will allow the specialist to observe the shape of the cornea, which will help in diagnosing you with astigmatism. Another test to be performed is done with an optical refractor machine. You will simply look through lenses of different strengths and read an alphabet chart to get the proper prescription for your condition.

After the optometrist writes you a prescription for eyeglasses, you can take it to the eyeglass place of your choice to purchase frames. Some optometrists can provide a test and frames during the same visit. Stop allowing astigmatism to cause headaches when you can fix the problem by wearing eyeglasses.
